The Elements of Music & Rhythmic Notation

Pupils will experience a variety of Listening, Composing and Performing activities to secure their understanding of Rhythm and The Elements of Music.

Key Vocabulary:
The Elements of Music: Pitch, Dynamics, Texture, Timbre, Tempo, Duration
Rhythmic Notation: crotchet, quaver(s), minim, semibreve
Pupils will be able to:
Understand how the elements of music can be used to create musical contrasts and add musical expression.
Apply the elements of music to a given musical stimulus
Employ the elements of music in performance tasks
Disciplinary Knowledge –
Learn to read, perform, and compose with rhythms using musical notation.
Learn to recognise how elements of music are used in musical expression.

Encourage your child to continue their musical studies beyond the classroom. Wakefield Music Services provide both individual and group lessons should your child wish to learn to play an instrument or develop their vocal skills.
Encourage your child to join in with the music department's extra-curricular programme. The department offers a wide range of activities for pupils of all levels of musical experience including the Ossett Academy Orchestra, Ukulele and Guitar Groups and Choir.

Mystery Melodies & The Notes in the Treble Clef

Pupils will experience a variety of Listening, Composing and Performing activities to secure their understanding of musical pitch and the instruments of the String Family.

Recognition of string instruments and their timbres: violin, viola, cello, double bass, harp

Read and perform well-known melodies from a written score.
Recognise the individual timbres of the instruments of the string family.
Compose melodies using a limited range of notes

Ukulele Ensemble & The Woodwind Family

Pupils will experience a variety of Listening, Composing and Performing activities to develop skills in performance using ukuleles and other instruments and recognise the instrumental timbres of the Brass Family.

Chords (including C, F & G)
Recognition of woodwind instruments by timbre including flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon.
Pupils will be able to:
Play a variety of well-known pieces on the ukulele using the chords C, F & G.
Play an active role in class ensemble performances of well-known pieces
Perform in small group and class ensembles
Disciplinary Knowledge –

Beatz Composing Challenge (in Ternary Form) & The Brass Family

Pupils will experience a variety of Listening, Composing and Performing activities to develop skills in composing using music software and the instruments of the Brass Family.
