Term 1

The formal elements of art

Pupils will begin their investigation into the formal elements of art.
By the end of Term one pupils will be able to:
Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.
Identify key formal elements and successfully apply these to their visual recording.
Begin to evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.
know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
Learn how to master a range of wet and dry media.
Undertake practical activities that help to build understanding and application of the formal elements.
Sample work in the style of various artists and art movements.
What pupils will do in order to gain the knowledge and skills.
Undertake a series of practical activities which will allow students to explore all the formal elements in a hands on way.
Some of these concepts will be established through practical sessions for the first time.
These key concepts will be revisited throughout the rest of Key Stage Three and form the foundations of success moving into Key Stage Four.

Students will be encouraged to follow links embedded within the learning objectives to enrich their understanding of key artist and techniques.

Term 2

Pupils will begin their investigation into basic textile techniques.
By the end of Term two pupils will be able to:
Identify key basic textile techniques and successfully apply these in their work.
Begin to gain an understanding of some key textile manipulation techniques.
Learn how to thread a needle.
Undertake practical activities that help to develop fabric manipulation and basic sewing skills.
Sample work in the style of various artists and artists.
What pupils will do in order to gain the knowledge and skills.
Undertake a series of practical activities which will allow students to explore basic sewing and applique skills.
Some of these concepts will be established through practical sessions for the first time.
These key concepts will be revisited throughout the rest of Key Stage Three and form the foundations of success moving into Key Stage Four.

Term 3

Pupils will consolidate the skills they have learnt throughout the year and apply them to a final piece around the theme of a totem.
By the end of term three pupils will be able to:
Successfully apply a range of techniques to create a highly personalised and resolved outcome.
Gain an understanding of art from other cultures.
Learn how to select the most appropriate media from a range of wet and dry media.
Undertake practical activities that help to build understanding of composition and strengthen understanding of the formal elements
Sample work in the style of various artists and art movements.
What pupils will do in order to gain the knowledge and skills.
Undertake a series of practical activities which will allow students to select and refine their skills as their final piece develops.
Students will be able to select from a range of skills taught throughout term one and term two.
Students will have the opportunity to revisit and master these skills throughout this term.
